Autumn Ice

nights have been freezing
and
so have my ponds

i love the geometrical shapes
like faceted gems

like a dream
gazing through ice
autumn leaves
grace the creeks floor

pond fish
have begun their quiet
hibernation like existence under ice

and today it is snowing
one inch so far

  1. Such pretty patterns formed by the ice. I love the one with the leaves underneath. It's amazing how the fish can exist under a sheet of ice - but maybe when they enter a state of hibernation their needs are diminished. We are expecting some snow tonight!

    1. hello Sandra,

Always lovely to hear from you.
I love the one with leaves too. It seems like a mix of autumn and winter.
Yes, the fish have diminished needs, they barely move, not sure if they eat. This is their 3rd winter, so they do survive.

      wishing you a lovely snow.

  6. Oh, so water is protected from cold winds and snow...:) I like the bright fish's silhouettes under the ice... It's strange to know they are there -so very close and so far away at the same time!

    1. it really is interesting to consider the fish surviving under the ice, also the frogs and all the other pond life.

  8. I had forgotten this marvel, and am extremely unlikely to see it in Marin County.

  10. Fascinating patterns! It’s hard to believe they formed naturally. You made me want to take pictures of a frozen pond in the early morning bundled in the coat but it is forecasted this year is to be warm winter. Stay warm, Tammie.

  12. Hello,Tammie
You have shown such lovely patters in the ice! It is surprising to see the fish swimming under the ice.I hope they will go into their hibernation
in the water. It must be warmer than the ice.
    Take care, Tammie.

    1. Tomoko, the fish are on year three, i believe. So they have already survived 2 winters. It is simply their way.

  13. Tammie, I read the comments and we all agree. Such wonderful photos, the first one is so attractive, like your poetry says, gemlike, the leaves one is just gorgeous!! It seems like a magical world trapped underneath the ice like preserved there without moving. But I suspect that they may breakdown to provide food for the animals below, even if they need less perhaps just a little at a time.
I never imagined that the fish hibernate, or that the frogs also survive under the ice cap in such cold conditions, it is indeed like another realm.
Thank you for bringing it to us Tammie!
