Solar Eclipse

Today was the full solar eclipse.
Where I live, NW Montana, the eclipse was only partial.
I did not have special glasses to watch the moon cloak the suns light,
still I wanted to be outside under the veiling light.

The light did change,
a bit like the world looks with sunglasses on, less bright, a bit darker, a softness to life’s edges.

I walked around the forest and meadow coming to our dirt road where the shadows of the alder trees danced on the ground.

I noticed the shapes of the shadows!

it was the eclipse painted on the earth over and over again

so that is where I stopped to watch the veiling and unveiling of the sun

 as the minutes passed
the light crescent shapes grew larger
as the moon passed between the sun and us

the shadows were expressed a bit different
through the giant spruce tree

I was delighted and kissed with awe

endlessly nature offers magic for us to discover

the moon had nearly passed the sun above

last I looked
full circles of light danced on the road

the fullness of the sun's light
has returned to our day

  1. Here in Madrid, they said that in the afternoon, about nine o'clock, the eclipse was going to be seen, I did not see anything. But Montana and Oregon must have looked pretty good.
    Have a good one, Tammie.

  2. You have solar magic painted on the ground.
    So amazing.
A friend had the same effect on his backyard deck.

  3. Bob And I hiked to the top of Peak 10. We were supposed to be at 93 percent but aside from a coolness and a slight dimming of ight, we didn't notice much change. We did not have the glasses so like you we investigated the light and shadows. The landscape itself was majestic. I love your photos showing the play of light.

    1. Hi Barb,

Thank you for sharing your experience. The light was change was quite noticeable in my yard, which is edged in forest. It was as though someone dimmed the lights. Then I began to pay more attention. In a way it was subtle, but certainly tangible.

Fun to hear that you also explored the light and shadows.

      Thank you for enjoying.

  6. My friend, Karen at Beatrice Euphemie, saw crescent shapes similar to this on her deck outside and inside her home if you want to check it out (she's on my side bar). Your pictures are so interesting and filled with wonder. Yes, here in California, it was so strange to see it getting darker during the morning hours. I didn't have the solar sunglasses, so didn't look up, but I did observe outside and all around cause today was a part of history, and I can tell my grandkids. Your posts are always so enchanting, and you take the loveliest of pictures. So glad I found you in blog land, Tammie Lee.

  7. What beautiful and artistic shots of the partial eclipse in your part of the world. I loved all those crescent shapes dancing on the ground! What a lovely experience for you!
We couldn't see the eclipse here, but I did see a total solar eclipse in France in 1999. Quite an experience!

  10. That was my experience too. I hadn't bought glasses, as I was more interested in the surrounding light than anything.

  11. Delightful shadow and light!

Here in Ottawa, it was also partial, and clear skies at the time of the eclipse. I didn't have glasses, but went out at the peak time and saw that the tone of the blue sky was different from usual.

  13. I have seen several photos of these shadows now, and they fascinate me. The last eclipse I remember I was too young to look for such details. Next time!

  14. Yours are the first such shadows I've seen. Others are beginning to share theirs. They're amazing. Thanks for sharing.

I'm thinking of hanging around until 2024 when we will be "host" to the eclipse. :) The sky went "different" here, and a hush filled all the space around and inside our home. The birds got a little nap, but the most worrying thing I've read reported was the farmed salmon escaping because unusually high tides flushed them through broken nets into BC waters. Some were caught and there are photos of those poor fish. I'm sure many more unusual thing happened, but the deformed and diseased salmon is disturbing. Fish should not be farmed. Americans have no idea what they're eating any more. So the eclipse did good in a number of ways. :)

    1. Only 7 more years for you. Yes, the light went 'different' here too. I did not know about the salmon. That is something and yes disturbing. I agree with you about farming. When it is done, food or animals it should only be done in a way that is healthy for all life.

  15. I love the dancing feather shadows I see. Alas, no eclipse for me. It barely showed in downtown Toronto (though I did take a quick look through a bell hop's glasses and it was quite wonderful!).

    Your photos are just beautiful!

  17. Special and rare! We heard here about this phenomen in America in our news. We have to wait more than 50 years until he next sunlight-darkness in Germany. I watched it several years ago - and a smaller one - very magic - three years ago. OH THIS LIGHT!!
