Winter's Joy

 rambling in the woods
crusty snow beneath my boots
cacophonous alarm
to sylvan dwellers near and far
dropping to my knees
treasuring what I spy
winter crystals

a delightful
sight
~

a few days ago
following tracks in the woods
I stirred up a mammal that I have never seen

we think it is a mink or fisher
larger than a house cat:

  4. Such a beautiful change from dreary rainy city life. Another kind of inspiration. I'm sure I'll hear something howl in my dreams if I fall asleep thinking of these images and words.

  5. Your ice crystals melt my heart! I am soon going out to ramble, too - very cold here. It has been minus for several days when we awake but has now "warmed" to 2 degrees!

  6. Beautiful ice Chrystals and I don't think that is a mink or a ferret, but certainly a close relative. Not far from where I live there used to be a lot of mink farms and many now run loose, either from escaping or being let loose by the animal rights activists and this ones legs are a little long and just doesn't look exactly like a mink, though I certainly could be wrong.

  20. Looks very much like a fisher to me... minks have a slinkier, more streamlined look about them. Either way, not your every day sighting!

  21. Oh yes - so much joy here! I never see animals like that where I live!! Cool!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  22. How did you capture such beautiful snow crystal? :D :D Are you using micro lens? And you can even see the layering of each very clearly!

And the mysterious animal looks more like a fisher.. mink has a thinner and smaller tail... :)

  26. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh!!! You with the magic and beautiful eyes! I LOVE YOUR SNOWFLAKES!!! Always have.

Tammie, you got that right with your comment on my blog! Small is very difficult. Just read Amalia's latest post. I actually like very small, very tiny things and I just want to make this clear, I do not blog with anyone whose work I consider trashy.

  27. Ah Tammie, this is a special post! Your ice photo's are amazing. I love how you capture so much detail in your shots. The snowflakes look like glass crystals, they are such beautiful formations.
The fluffy dark creature looks like a small wild cat to me. What a wonderful moment to capture it hunting in the snow!

Thank you for your lovely comments.
I have been meaning to reply to you for ages about the Bengal cat, but I have not been feeling to great lately.
Bengals are lovely but they can be a bit antisocial and wild with other cats, they need quite a bit of time to get used to their new cat family.

Have a fantastic 2011 with plenty of inspiration!
    Keep warm this winter.
    Love,
    Jo. xx

  45. Oh, you are so fortunate to have such beauty in such a simple element as water. Here in Queensland, Australia water is a far different 'keetle of fish'- amazing how the same substance can present so differently.

  51. Ah, yes, a delight to see! "Seeing" is what you do best.

I don't know your animal. We don't have much open water around here so none of the potential species live here. He does look built for the water!

  52. Beautiful shots and I am going with fisher! Frankly I have never seen one but just looked on Google images and yep, I vote fisher. :)

Hope you are having a beautiful weekend!
