Mamma Sqiurrel Moves her Family

it was the soft murmuring that came from the wall
sounds of newborns calling for milk
muffled and soft sounds
that brought the warmth of their mother near
this is how I knew I now lived with squirrels
then one day arrived
and the scurrying feet of mamma
was a clue that something new was happening
I ran out to find she was moving out
babies in mouth
stealing insulation too
~

sorry this is blurred
but look at her flying with babe in mouth:

  1. Interesting - do you know what caused her to move??

  2. No, I have no idea as to why she moved. But I was happy.
I also got to see that she moved her babies down a hole in the earth, along with plenty of insulation. I felt bad about that, as insulation is nasty stuff!

    sweet week to you.

You got some great pictures of the move! A few years ago we watched a chipmunk do the same thing. Amazing, isn't it!

  9. I love the 3rd photo, where the mamma takes a break from running off with her baby and holds it in her hands before she runs off up a hill!

An interesting but beneficial desicion on her part to move her familiy out of your walls. Were you able to plug the hole she had entered your wall with once the family was moved out? Squirrels are lovely to have in nature, but not so much in the house.

I got to watch a squirrel move her babies out of a tree cavity to another tree one time when it was raining, the first home must have been flooding.

  11. hi Stacey,
I did close the air vent the squirrel was going in and out of my basement through. At least I hope i did. I agree, wonderful in nature but not in our home. How wonderful that you got to see a mamma squirrel moving her family. You have seen so many wonderful things!

When they move into the walls in homes, are they known to chew on wires? What kind of damage do they do to homes? These are great pictures--they're so precious :)

  24. She is so beautiful! Such a caring and loving Mummy! I've seen a few squirrels in the city park, but never that close and never a newborn one. Squirrels are a rare sight here, near the river Danube.:) You were lucky to catch them moving to another "house" - thank you for filling our hearts with joy, Tammie!

  29. Talk about photographer's luck! How you managed to stay calm and quiet through this is beyond me! Those are wonderful images, Tammie, I hope Mama Squirrel and her baby finds a better home. :)

  30. hello everyone,

they moved into a hole in the earth.
it was a wonderful thing to see, because they are fun to watch and because it meant they were not living in my wall anymore!

    xo

  31. Auroran Lauriel,

    they could chew on wires
but also they go to the bathroom where ever they want, that is the main thing I don't like. Squirrels are asleep when I sleep so they don't wake me at night like some animals. Just not very clean to live with animals.

  32. T- as others have said great shots and wonderful experience but having them in the ground and not your wall is definitely the way to go - and so many more opportunities to be entertained. B

  39. Amazing they can be gentle with those sharp teeth. A neighbor has one who has stolen 2 flags through the last couple of years and uses them to build nests.

  46. Dear Tammie, If you do ever discover why she moved out . . . would you let me know?!! Your photos are wonderful and can make one almost love the critter, but inside my walls chewing and all . . . no thank you . . . wires are too close for comfort. Wonderful captures and words! Your words are lovely and softly accepting.

  47. great pictures...and words...as always. what a good mother she is...moving the little ones to a place where she feels safer...

    ReplyDelete
  48. Wow. What a mom! I wonder what motivated her to do that. That is really interesting. To be so vulnerable, to expose her young thus--it must have been something big for her.

    ReplyDelete
  49. That's amazing! And you have some great camera karma to catch that. You just might be a wizard! ;)

  52. Oh Tammie! What GORGEOUS photos! What a beautiful thing to see, and to be able to capture. So, I see from your comment above that they moved only a short way from your house, and are now in a hole in the ground.

  53. Great photos...
and nice she decided to find another home... squirrels are rodents..not so clean. Years ago I had friends how found a baby squirrel and took it home to raise it...a questionable decision...one day they forgot to latch the cage which was in the house...the squirrel had a wonderfilled time, shredding drapes, knocking over houseplants, pictures off the walls...and as you said..they don't have a clear idea of where to pottie. It was a costly mistake...and the squirrel was deemed good for release.

Well, Tammie! Your photographs are always stunning and provoke a contemplative moment in me...but this one of mother and baby squirrels is just mind-stopping. What an amazing moment to find in this Garden of Eden that is Earth. It reminds me of Einstein's words, "I want to know the thoughts of God. The rest is just details."
Sending my best Summer wishes, and thanks for visiting my blog! Susan
