  4. Good morning Tammie.
How beautiful your fungi are. The first violet one looks like a gathered skirt an elegant woman wears. I like the fourth photo too. I imagine how the woods on the slope is changing this time of the year.
    Have a good new week,

  10. ...you made me chuckle with this one: "it's a family affair • ♫♫♫•"

I guess the squirrels have been busy dragging mushrooms up a the trees! Yesterday I saw a squirrel running with a huge mushroom in his mouth on his way to a tree. I had never seen that before! I've seen them eating them in place, but never running with one! :-)

  11. Hi Tammie! Me again...I looked it up to see why squirrels leave mushrooms in trees and found this on the National Geographic site: "red squirrels will hang fungi out to dry between tree branches so that it keeps better over the winter." (from research by Richard Thorington). Everyone might know that, but I didn't! Here is a link to the article: http://voices.nationalgeographic.com/2014/09/26/squirrels-animals-fall-winter-science-united-states-surprising-facts/.

    1. Thank you for the link Kelly. i look forward to seeing it.

i did a mushroom foray this weekend and the teacher said that also some mushrooms are bitter or have chemical compounds in them that make them not so edible, but the drying, freezing thawing in a tree will change the chemical makeup, making it edible for them. Similar to how humans cook most wild mushrooms. love learning this stuff! So fun that you saw a squirrel running with a mushroom. I laid a tray of mushrooms from the foray on my porch to study and when i saw it later half of the mushrooms were gone! I have seen some of them in my trees, so fun.

time to go on another mushroom hunt.

    1. Hello Limner,
the first and second image are the same mushroom. it seems like the longer i have it the darker it is getting. you can see the cap was a pale white lavender color when i spotted it. Thank you for your message and question.
