First Snow and Cold Temperatures

any thoughts on what these photos are of?

 twas a very cold morning
-5F

frozen condensation
on the inside of my cabin windows

wandering the forest
amongst our first snow
i found a squirrel stashed a mushroom
up in a tree

my ponds have a thick layer of ice
thick

when you look close
sha zam!

and
frosty crystals

all over the surface!

but when i got out of this wee hollow
what a beautiful and cold day:

it looks like winter has begun

  1. "Sha Zam", indeed! You are the master with a macro lens. The condensation inside your windows is true art. And the other photos of frost are incredible. Your cabin looks so cozy and inviting...

I recently purchased some extension tubes so I can get even closer with my macro lens but I question whether I'll have the patience. Time will tell.

    1. so fun that you got the sha zam KB, thanks for that. Thank you for enjoying the artful images. I thought they were pretty awesome, but a little shocking to have ice forming inside the wee cabin. yes, the cabin is cozy with it's wood stove going. I would love to hear how you like your extension tubes.

  13. Our lives have been enriched by your sharing. Through your eyes and talent we have the opportunity to see the magnificence of nature. Thank you. (plus our glasses don't go frosty as we breath hard in the cold air, our hands don't get frost bite, our snowsuit zipper doesn't get misguided as fumbling hands try to zip - so many thank you's need to be said!)

  14. Tammie, I'm so glad you posted these photos of ice crystals! When I got my new macro, I told Bob about your photos of snow flakes. So, I just showed him these shots and told him I want to "grow up" to be just like you! (It doesn't matter that I'm ancient and you're not, does it?) I love how you showed the macros and then showed the source. Bob is encouraging me to go out and take some macros right now - but, it's really frigid, the wind is blowing, and the fire feels might good!

    1. hello Barb,
How fun that you enjoyed these. Wind and macros is a super challenging combination! I am inside by my fire too. But that sun will pull me outside at some point for a little while, still it is 17F out and that is chilly! PS we might be close in age ;-)

  18. Hello, Tammie Lee.

The snow seems to have arrived very quickly.
However, white is the most beautiful color. It is also is most difficult to create.

Have a good weekend. From Japan, ruma❃

  20. Woah! Winter really has come to you! Those first photos were on the INSIDE of your cabin windows?! Brrrrrr!

But it is also the beginning of a whole season of delicious macro ice photography, and that's something I look forward to each year.

  21. Yes, these are the first steps of winter. She had just reminded that she's coming... I adore your winter photographs, Tammie, and especially those of ice crystals and snowflakes!
Still I wish you a mild and sunny weekend!:)

  22. Hi Tammie, I expected your first wintry post after receiving word that it was snowing in Alberta.
As a boy, we always had Jack Frost on the inside windows. Windows panes and cameras have changed a lot since those days. Wouldn't it be great to take a modern camera back in time. There must be an H.G.Wells out there to make the dream a reality. I heard just the other day that with the advances in dna research, they'll soon be able to build up an authentic picture of medieval murder victims and their killers.
    Beautiful pictures Tammie.

  26. Oh Wow! The landscape has transformed around your home with beautiful ice crystals everywhere! It is pure magic to see your photos and I love them all, especially your wooden cabin surrounded in a cloak of frost. Ice bubbles on your windows, it must be so cold where you are. I hope you have the log fire on full blast and are drinking plenty of tea!
    Stay warm Tammie.
    Warmest wishes,
    Jo. xx

  27. The first dusting of snow is so exciting even though it is too cold. I prefer the cold, bracing air of winter to the dull, humid air of summer in my part of the world. In winter, we are chilled to the bone, but it rarely snows… that’s a shame. All these photos are fascinating. Stay warm, Tammie.

  28. All the wonders of the changing seasons that I miss so much. Do you skate on your pond? I would, even if I had to use a Zimmerframe not to break anything. Decades ago when we lived in Vermont, we had a lake at our front for and a skating pond at the back. It was a joyful time.
Where you live is just so beautiful that it takes my breath away.
