Samhain; Gaelic for Summer's End

clouds were passing through today
from west to east
through hills and valley
meadow and high mountain

cloaked within their misty forms
traveled celestial ancients

their sole purpose
to sprinkle blessings on the land
and all that lived beneath

and so they did
and so it goes
blessings from above
~

tis Halloween
and the sun descending towards the horizon drew me out of my wee cabin
to sunset bathe
and greet the Celtic New Year with my heart

whether you celebrate Halloween
Day of the Dead, honoring those who have passed to the beyond
or Samhain
I wish you a gracious time

Whispers of Autumn

a quiet spreads and fills the sky
with a warmth that
whispers of autumn
it is more than the green
of aspens a shade more limey
than yesterdays deep green
there is a quality that fills the air

dragon flies
are just a few
hummingbirds flew away where to
weeks ago
there were ten times more frogs
maybe they burrowed
into the mud
or have the muskrats eaten them

ground squirrels seem to have gone underground
whispers of seasonal changes
in the coolness of the night air
in the music of leaves
in the colors of the setting sun
whispers of autumns nearing
arrival

Morning Stroll

nights dipping temperatures
freeze the skin on ponds
and creeks
geometric ice grows through the night
morning stroll through woods
to see the sights

as daytime warms
each and every moment
transforms
this glory of
hard edged crystals
they soften
then melt

slabs of ice break free
music like chimes dance through forest
and meadow
spring is alive
touching every particle
of water air earth
me

behold
a fresh footprint
of newly awakened bear
bear was here before me
enlivened I glance around
following each paw print
weaving through the trees
right to my home!

wandering through the woods will be a different
journey from now on
