Crystalline Colonies

night temperatures drop
moisture in the earth
rises like a phoenix
in the form
of
thin delicate
lacy ice
geometric columns inches in height
breathe gently
amongst this fragile beauty

  3. Tammie, you have the most interesting frost and ice out there. I don't see those forms!

  4. Nature's icy crystals captured so well! I called Bob to have him look at the latest of your ice photos. Magical, Tammie. I like to think of winter moisture rising "like a phoenix." We got 14" of snow overnight (great skiing).

  17. T-such beauty-clear and fragile - the cusp of spring offers much - the flicking forward to new growth and backwards to crysaline cold. Enjoy. B

  18. Breathtaking images Tammie. I'm curious, are clusters of crystals called colonies - or did that come to you? I'm fascinated by the presence of community in nature - the thought of water crystalized in communities makes me feel good!

    Cheers

  21. Hello everyone,
Thank you for enjoying my icy photography!

Shannon, I love the line you shared with us "like a miniature Fortress of Solitude". you have shown the power of the small details. Thank you.

    Barbara,
The use of the word 'colony' was my poetic freedom. sometimes it is hard for me to describe what I find in nature. This beautiful expression of water was only along the waters edge as the creek flowed through the forest, so I thought 'colony' might work.

I have never seen this beautiful formation before. I have seen geometrical ice on the surface of water such as a creek, pond or lake, but not rising from the earth, 3 inches high and thin and fragile like this was. I was mesmerized. At first i thought it was simply snow or a clump of ice. As I settled in to enjoy the dance of ice floating in the creek I saw it more closely!

    Fragile temporary beauty.

    warmth,
    Tammie

  22. Your ice photos for this post and the Equinox are beautiful. I will always be amazed by the length of your winter and summer and the quick transitions from the one to the other in spring and autumn. They are pretty much all of equal length here.

  44. Tammie, There is such beauty in this "colony" of crisscrossing ice forms. I do not recall having seen this pattern of ice art before. The myriad structures water can create is truly awesome and your show us so many . . . then heighten our experience with your poetic wisdom. I too find it inspiring how you continue to find beauty in winter gestures, though others are deeply set in blossoms of spring. You never complain but always marvel in the moment.
